As I work with teachers who are exploring the new Australian Curriculum, I am struck by the many references to visual literacy. The definition of a text has changed to include, any communication of meaning produced in any media that incorporates language, including sound, film, print, film, electronic and multimedia representations. Gone are the days where a class teacher only used levelled readers in their classroom!
While researching for a presentation for a school recently, I was struck by the many iconic images in film, newspaper and poster format that have shaped thinking in late 20th century early 21st century. We are not short of visual texts to inform, entertain and develop critical thinking skills… and that is not even taking into account the huge range of fantastic picture books that we can enjoy with our students.
We are teaching in exciting times with opportunities to explore a huge range of multi-modal texts with our students.
