Using picture books to teach maths concepts

Screen Shot 2013-09-23 at 8.14.45 PMTeaching mathematics using picture books engages young students and reinforces abstract concepts. Bears in the Night by Stan and Jan Berenstain is an old favourite that all students love. I have used this book with great success for many years to teach mathematical vocabulary to Kindergarten students. Now I use an iPad to record students’ use of positional language which provides students with immediate feedback.

The new NSW Mathematics Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum outcomes for Kindergarten match perfectly with the use of this text. This lesson sequence is now available as a free download.
