Selecting the right text is half the battle!

I had the priviledge of working in two classrooms last week. I taught in a grade 5 and a grade 3 classroom. In both cases I thought long and hard about the text that I would use. I selected ‘an oldie but a goodie’ for grade 5 and used The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg and for grade 3: a new book available on Amazon. It is The Matchbox Diary by Paul Fleischman. A great text draws students in and makes the teaching easy. I love that the NSW English K-6 Syllabus stresses the need for teachers to use quality literature and sets up the expectation that students will ENJOY English. It is obvious that time spent selecting, reading and finding suitable texts is time well spent as students respond enthusiastically to a text that captures their imagination. I recommend lots of bookshop moments and time spent reading the texts that teachers choose to share with students to ensure the magic moment of teaching connecting with student learning.
