Scaffolding Student Learning

I love being in classrooms and seeing the many ways in which teachers scaffold student learning. Word walls are a great way to ensure high frequency words and topic words can be easily seen by students as they write. I know a teacher with a gifted and talented upper primary class whose word wall has colour coded words that show the origins of the words. What an interesting way to enthuse students about language. Another teacher in a school with a strong ESL focus makes sets of cards with photos to complement each topic addressed by classes to ensure that ESL students can access the vocabulary they need to participate in class discussion and writing. From day one of Kindergarten word walls serve as a visual dictionary of words so students can access them quickly and confidently as they write.
