Maths picture books

IMG_1731TRIO has been collecting picture books which we use as a hook to engage students with maths concepts. Most of the books in our collection are picture books, not specifically written for maths but they delight students and help teachers to focus student interest in the lesson.
The work of Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe in planning effective learning sequences supports the idea of a ‘hook’ to immerse the learner in a genuine problem, issue or challenge. (Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High Quality units, page 11) There is a variety of tools that teachers can use to spark student interest in maths and being aware of the range of picture books that can be used in every grade is an advantage.
