Cultural perspectives

What is Holi? The festival of colours , Holi, is an exciting festival marking the end of winter in India and the beginning of spring. It is a Hindu festival celebrated with bonfires, feasting and playing with colour. Perhaps this is an important cultural celebration for the community represented in your school.

In 2020 it is celebrated on Monday 9th March. The celebrations include  a free- for-all of colour. Everyone gets covered in coloured powder. Coloured powder is thrown and sometimes water balloons or water pistols are used to spread the colours. People walk through the streets and visit family and friends. They party and dance and sing.

If this is a celebration that represents your community, think about how you can acknowledge it and celebrate it. We have added an Art Lesson which could be used to celebrate The Festival of Colours. Click here.
